Should Bloggers Get Political?

February 3, 2011

One of the biggest questions that I get all the time is whether or not a blog should be political. I’m not a big fan of having people make their blog all about the politics. Of course, you might look at me and think that I’m being hypocritical, considering that I have reached out to you about politics that matter to me. The truth is that you can add in politics if you know that you can handle what can come out of mentioning them.

Remember that everyone has a different viewpoint on the things that matter to them, and your political views might upset a few people. Of course, there is something about controversy, so if you know that you can handle negative feedback, then why not go for it?!

If you are going to go down this route, here are a few suggestions:

1. Consistencypolitical blogging

You don’t want to be seen as someone that jumps onto any political cause they find appealing. You might want to stick with only a few political issues at a time. It works out a lot better that way, from many difficult angles. Just stay consistent and you’ll develop a small following for the politics that really matter to you on the whole.

2. Charm

Everyone loves following a funny political blogger, and you can definitely become that blogger if you desire. It might take you a little while as people are slowly “getting” your humor, but it’s something that can happen if you really want it. Make sure that you don’t take yourself seriously and you’ll be just fine.

3. Consideration

Remember that not everyone will agree with you, but that doesn’t give you license to be inflammatory. Present your points in a balanced way, and people are much more likely to have civil discussion with you. You cannot tell people that you want civilized discussion and then attack them. This will only make it much harder in the end to get things done with your blog.

One of the final reasons why you might want to think twice about going political is the fact that advertisers can’t really monetize the traffic. It’s better to focus on your niche rather than going with anything that sounds appealing to jump on to at the moment it’s happening. Political fads may come and go, but do you really want your blog to be known by that? Stay within your subject matter and you’ll be just fine.
